Context

Every year, my school organizes a two-week event where all ESD students, from first year to master's level, come together to create a project in a single evening: DIGINIGHT. In 2021, the theme was “Resilience in the face of Covid.” I joined the Video Mapping team, made up of 24 other students. Due to the lockdown and strict health restrictions, we had to adapt this event, usually held in person, to transpose an immersive discipline into a video format.

Video mapping is a discipline that blends craftsmanship, motion design, video editing, audio, and lighting to offer an immersive experience to the audience by allowing them to interact with physical surfaces.

How can we translate a typically immersive experience into a video format while preserving its visual and emotional impact?

Intention

In "The Drunken Boat," Rimbaud describes a tumultuous journey, where a boat, drunk and adrift, drifts away from its bearings, carried by chaotic waves. We wanted to reinterpret this poem because we experienced two years of our higher education marked by COVID, which disrupted our daily lives like a storm.

This poem then became a metaphor for our experience during lockdown. Like the boat, we faced a loss of bearings, uncertainty about a hazy future, and forced isolation. The poem illustrates both the confusion and the quest for freedom, but also the need to adapt and reinvent ourselves in new and difficult circumstances.

Resilience, the central theme of our project, resonates with the idea that, even in adversity, it is possible to transform and keep moving forward, like the boat that continues its journey despite the storm.

Process

The final result being a video rendering, we were able to play with angles, scale, and textures to create the illusion. Everything was filmed in first-person perspective to maintain the project's immersive quality. The viewer is thus placed in the shoes of someone facing a storm, culminating in a burst of sunshine, thereby celebrating resilience.
